We had the amazing opportunity of bringing along Alana Daly-Mulligan, a talented photographer and friend of the club. She did such a great job in capturing the highlights of the trip. After sorting through the 10,000 (!) or so photos we managed to pick our favourites and post them on Facebook.
SSTO 2019 was amazing. As we visited from the 31st of January to the 3rd of February, Edinburgh was a true winter wonderland. For the first two days, we explored the city and all it has to offer, including the famous Edinburgh Castle, Camera Obscura and of course the busy high street shops!
Friday afternoon was podium training time, so we headed to Pleasance Sports Centre to put those finishing touches on our routines. It was great to see friends from other colleges. As this was our first competition away from home, our freshers were able to mingle with people from other colleges whom they hadn’t met before, forming friendships (and perhaps a healthy rivalry or two!)
Saturday morning meant game faces were on. With competition running from 9 am right up until 4 or 5 pm, everyone was flat out all day! It was great to see our members representing UCC with black, white and red leotards floating around the sports hall. We represented team Ireland once again, with our distinct green half-zips. We are very proud of everyone who competed and helped out with judging. It can be said for certain that UCC’s presence was felt: Kevin Sheppard won gold in Advanced Men, Jack Davis won silver in Elite Pro Men and Nicole Geaney won silver in Elite Pro Women. Nicole Geaney was also awarded highest female tariff, along with winning silver in Level 3 Synchro with Tara Collins (UCD guest.)
Sunday = Funday! There was so much to do on Sunday, from synchro to DMT to Two Trick. There were also games to be played in the corner of the hall, and even massages offered, all to raise funds for charity. At the end of the day, it was time to bid farewell to SSTO for another year.
We had a great weekend at SSTO 2019. We can’t wait for ISTO now, to see all those friendly faces and hopefully bring home a medal or two!
